The photographs in this book were taken by Kasper Akhøj between spring 2009 and summer 2017. Akhøj documented the ongoing restoration of E-1027 («Maison en bord de mer»), Eileen Gray’s icon of modernist architecture. The images are based on photographs taken by Eileen Gray which were first published in the journal L’Architecture Vivante in 1929. Akhøj’s photographs are a kind of remake, recreating the perspective and composition of the original images. During the six visits to the villa between 2009 and 2017, Kasper Akhøj created up to six versions of Gray’s illustrations, but always only included one of them in Welcome (To The Teknival). The resulting overlap of chronologies emphasises the difficult restoration process and references the fascinating succession of occupants and their influence on E-1027. The book includes essays by Beatriz Colomina and Amy Zion and an interview with Kasper Akhøj and Jorge Otero Pailos.
